Jellyfish paintings - adjusted

I have adjusted the paintings from before to create more contrast between the dark and light spaces. The lighting on the first jellyfish was not working out that well so I have changed it a bit and I think it looks a bit more realistic.

Jellyfish Paintings

Here are some paintings of the Jellyfish in different environments. This is the black and white stage of the paintings, I will be going on and adding colour.

Building Layouts

Here are some layouts for the building scenes.

Meeting with the tutor....

We had a meeting with the tutor and came out of that meeting with a list of things that we needed to do. A lot of the things that were said were good suggestion and something I took on board, but will not be using in the story. The story was that the these are the last of the humans left, that they had gone through so much despair and fear for their lives that having this Jellyfish as a new home was a new start. The main idea was to have a main female character that wanted to get out and explore the old world, despite what other have said. I did not write this part of the story as I thought this was an environment project, not a character project. Now I have been told that we need a main character, which is fine and I have written the bio for her.

As for the idea that the Jellyfish needs to be somewhere closer to danger, I found this difficult as because of the sheer size of the Jellyfish, it would not be anywhere close to the shore or ground. Having to add this in seems silly, and having to change the whole plot because of it means changing the intel idea. Which to me feels as if that my idea doesn't matter anymore, and that in the end I really have no chose in this project. I have to now add in a turtle to create some sort danger to the Jellyfish, which just seems silly, but I would rather do this then have the Jellyfish flying or having to make it almost hit the floor........ Also, a comment about how the city is not as important as the Jellyfish and the environment around it was not something that made any sense to me, as the city was the environment and not the environment that the jellyfish was swimming around in. As of that I have continued to as for building designs and for the modelers to model the city as this is the main feature for this project along with the Jellyfish. This is my opinion to what has happened and I'm a bit disappointed in what has happened.

Also after the team meeting, the whole team had another meeting to discussion who will be doing what. I was told to give the main character concept to shawna as she has been doing the characters so far, but when asked to do it she was fine until the idea of painting the outside world came up ( which was tasked to me) and she made the comment that she doesn't want to do characters anymore as its to hard for her, she would rather do that. This comment leaves me thinking of her in a way that annoys me, as she said at the beginning of the project she wanted to do the characters. Also she has not completed as much work as the others in my group and has only done what it seems to be the basic that she can do. This annoys me and disappoints me also, as this is a team effort and she is letting us down. I have now said that when she finishes the human concepts, she can move on to the new turtle idea. I feel that I shouldn't have to do this it means more work for others just to please one person. Now I have take on the main character concept as well as having to finish 3 rendered paintings of the Jellyfish.

StoryBoards

After having a mini meeting with our tutor, I was told we need to have storyboards in within the next two days. Planned to do this a bit later on, but as he wanted them quicker I got on with the job. These are not the finished storyboards, but are just the initial idea I had for them.

The group said that instead of writing it would be nice to have images instead. As the writing was there to help the viewer understand the story, I suggested that maybe some sort of animatic with a voice over might be nice to have. I wanted to have the story told as if someone from this world was explaining what is happening, so I will be writing down the text a bit later on for the speech.

Time table

I'm not sure where to put this and under what label, but here is the timetable for the project (this has to be changed now due to changes in the project over all, after the meeting with our tutor...)

Jellyfish Steps

Here are the steps that I have taken for a Jellyfish painting.

Jellyfish Painting

This was something that I wanted to do from the beginning of this project. This was really just for fun and also to practice digital painting.

Final Jellyfish Design

The group liked number 5's body on new designs, but liked 2's hood. So with this knowledge I took the designs back into photoshop and mixed the two designs together. The final Jellyfish is the one that we have chosen to use for the project.

After posting this image on our group on facebook, Emma started to design the way the city would be inside the Jellyfish. I took this image above and set out where the city would be roughly and where some outposts might be also.

Jelly Fish Designs - second round of Jellyfish

The group went over the designs and all really liked number 7 on the sheet, some liked over parts of other jellyfish, but the overall decision was that number 7 for the overall all design.

I took this design and the ideas from the other Jellyfish, and when over created another set of silhouettes for the designs. Below are the new designs;

Jelly Fish Designs

For the main Jelly fish design I created silhouettes to play about with the design and just paint down what even came into my mind. Here is the finished sheet for the silhouettes:

For the other concept artists I put out these two pages of references with all images that I got from the internet.

The Project Brief

We were asked to come up with a idea for an environment, which would in the end be modeled in 3D. My project was chosen and carried forward to be created. Below is the brief:

Digital Environment Brief – Individual Ideas

Back story –

After a foreseen global catastrophe suddenly fast-tracked unexpectedly to the year 2120, Earth was left flooded up to 3000 meters above sea level. Nearly all land species have died out including the human race due to the extreme change of environmental conditions, thus leaving very small groups left alive. A large group created a set of facilities that would be able to withstand this change of environment, enabling them to find a new home. The sea life has thrived with all but a few of their predators left alive, allowing them to feed more than ever before and grow to enormous sizes. Drifting across the sea in their facilities, the recent human survivors of the water rise encountered a colossal jellyfish. The date is now 2170 – almost 50 years has passed since the cataclysm shook every corner of the world. Restoration of a now-endangered species has arisen an underwater metropolis housed by a goliath, floating organism discovered shortly after the cataclysm; civilisation now resides as an incubated race under water.

Product –
Depending on the strength of the individuals of the group, I’d like to explore further ideas for this concept in a dependent range of final products such as:

  • Designs for the metropolis buildings and the Jellyfish itself.
  • Model of the Jellyfish and city within a 3D package.
  • A set of storyboards for an animated short movie.
  • A well-rigged pose or animation for the Jellyfish.
  • A segment of a potential movie using After Effects.

Inspiration –
My inspiration for this came from the idea of placing a city within a mushroom. Working through the idea I came onto thinking about what it would be like if it were instead a flower or a fish. Thinking over these ideas and looking at images on the internet, it made sense to me that maybe it would be an interesting idea if the city was inside or hanging onto an enormous jellyfish.  Below are some reference images that would help the idea of how a jellyfish may look like. Also, there are some images that inspired me when thinking about the city, the idea I have for this was something like the Hong Kong harbor view at night because of all the buildings and lights.
